On Wednesday, 28. October 2020 the DRGR proposal received several positive commentaries at a pre-launch event at the World Bank. German Executive Director Jürgen Zattler invited multiple report authors to present the core ideas of our report.
The DRGR co-chairs
- Shamshad Akhtar, Chair of the Board of Directors, Karandaaz Pakistan
- Stephany Griffith Jones, Financial Markets Program Director at the Initiative for Policy Dialogue, Columbia University
- Ulrich Volz, Director of the Centre for Sustainable Finance and Reader in Economics at SOAS University of London
appeared as speakers at the brown bag lunch at the World Bank while Ceyla Pazarbasioglu, Director of the Strategy, Policy, and Review Department (SPR) at the International Monetary Fund held the keynote. In the course of the discussion Moritz Kraemer, Chief Economic Advisor of Acreditus, and an important contributor to the report, addressed the fear of developing countries towards restructuring debt burdens as overblown since the loss of access to the capital market would last only a short while.
Around 150 participants attended the event. Discussants as Félix Fernández-Shaw, Director for International Cooperation and Development Policy at DG DEVCO, gave thoroughly positive feedback on our proposal to tackle the debt crisis and provide countries with the fiscal space for a green recovery.
The enthusiasm with which our ideas were received confirms the importance of our project – and makes us look forward to the global launch event on Monday, 16. November 2020 with additional optimism.
